Sweet Talkers Diabetics
Join this unique diabetes self-help group focused on finding, eating and making delicious and healthy foods to maintain optimal blood sugar levels and health. Monthly group meetings include short presentations on current scientific information regarding nutrition as well as highlighting pre-packaged, tasty, low carb products and where to find them. Cooking and baking demonstrations will also be available showing diabetic friendly breads, desserts and recipes with the ultimate goal of creating your own, satisfying meals and recipe book. This group will be led by Lisa Van Herik, MSW/Diabetes Educator/Nutritionist, assisted by Sweet Talkers Cofounder and CEO, Mark Goros.

The Okapi Duo: Chamber Music Concert
Together, Katie Kim and Brian King, students at the Oberlin Conservatory, make up the Okapi Duo. The Duo’s three-year collaboration has led them to tour in a number of cities across the U.S. and has showcased their versatility as an ensemble: from Mauro Giuliani’s Grand Duo Concertante to Grammy-winning composer Joan Tower’s Snow Dreams, together Ms. Kim and Mr. King display their creative artistry as musicians. In 2016, the Okapi Duo won its first award: First prize in the Great Composers Competition Series in the category “Music of the Americas” for their innovative rendition of Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

The La Jolla Theatre Ensemble presents the first of two summer staged readings which will take place in the Center’s beautiful outdoor courtyard: the classic American Romantic Comedy, THE RAINMAKER, by Richard Nash. Some time ago, in the midst of a severe drought in the West, a family is struggling not merely with making ends meet but with how to prevent its only female member from becoming (or remaining) an “old maid.” Along comes a charismatic stranger who, for $100, promises to make it rain within 24 hours. But is he nothing more than a charlatan? Join us and find out!

New York born, Los Angeles based jazz vocalist Melissa Morgan returns to San Diego to perform renditions of jazz standards and rediscovered gems of the Great American Songbook. A Thelonious Monk International Competition semi-finalist, Morgan made an appearance on Downbeat Magazine’s list of Jazz Vocalist Rios Stars and was considered for Grammy nominations in Best Vocal Jazz Album and Best Improvised Solo categories for the 2017 Grammys. She will be joined by Los Angeles based musicians Graham Dechter on guitar and bassist Alex Frank.
